BENJAMIN HARRISON BRIDGE ELEVATOR PROJECT BEGINS NEXT WEEK
Flagging operation will be in place for single lane closures; detour for full overnight closures
Benjamin Harrison Bridge/Route 156 (Prince George/Charles City) – Traffic impacts will start for the Benjamin Harrison Bridge elevator replacement project on Jordan Point Road/Route 156 beginning Monday, July 18. The bridge is located over the James River at the Prince George/Charles City line and carries approximately 4,500 vehicles per day. The $3 million project will replace the aging bridge’s elevators located in the structure’s lift span.
Alternating lane closures are possible both during the day and overnight, with occasional full weeknight closures. There will be an 11 foot lane restriction during the flagging operations and drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes. Drivers of oversized vehicles (with a width of 11 feet or more), can use I-295 and Route 5 as an alternate route. Marine traffic will remain unaffected.
For the week beginning Monday, July 18, drivers can expect the following planned traffic impacts: from 8 p.m.-6 a.m. Monday, July 18-Wednesday, July 20, single alternating lanes will be closed.
To avoid delays, drivers can use the following alternate route:
Take Jordan Point Road (Route 106/156) south to Route 10 west. Take Interstate 295 north to Route 5 (Exit 22A) back to Jordan Point Road (Route 106/156).
Through travelers can use Interstates 295 and 64 or the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry as alternate routes to the Hampton Roads area.
