Prince George County road project ranked 4th in Richmond region;
awaits CTB approval of FY18 Smart Scale

PRINCE GEORGE, VA - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released the statewide rankings of projects submitted to the FY18 Smart Scale transportation grant program. The Prince George County submission - intersection safety project at Route 106 (Courthouse Road) and Route 630 (Bull Hill Road) - was ranked 4th out of 72 in the Richmond region and 33rd of 404 statewide. The engineered solution proposed by VDOT is a dog bone-shaped roundabout that would ease traffic speeds and allow for full access to an intersection that has a history of vehicular accidents.

After VDOT holds a series of public comment meetings on the Smart Scale rankings this spring, the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) will vote on which projects to fund in each region. If approved by the CTB later this year, the grant award of $5,755,850 would fund the project starting in the FY18 VDOT budget. County Administrator Percy C. Ashcraft stated, “The County is thankful the VDOT Smart Scale ranking process recognizes the importance of this project. We ask for continued support by the CTB to finalize our project’s highly ranked score, award the grant, and proceed with the engineering phase. Safety improvements at Courthouse Road and Bull Hill Road are needed to mitigate this hazardous intersection.”
