This message is a monthly update in 2017 to better update our citizens and visitors to the website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.
County Government Offices will be closed Monday, May 29 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 30.
A Memorial Day observance will be held Monday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at the Prince George Heritage Center Lawn.
The Board of Supervisors will hold its monthly meetings this month at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 23 in the Board Room of the County Administration Building. A worksession will precede the May 9 meeting at 6 p.m. The tentative agenda topics are: (1) Proposed ordinance for real estate exemption in the case of a Line of Duty death; (2) Discussion of rates for Brickhouse Landing Subdivision; and (3) Proposal for Broadband Public/Private Partnership.
National Day of Prayer will be observed on Thursday, May 4 at 12 Noon and 7:00 pm. at the County Courthouse.
Prince George County Employee Appreciation Day will be held Friday, May 5. A picnic for all County employees will be held at Scott Park at 12:00 Noon.
The Prince George Farmers Market will kickoff Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Scott Park. The Market will also be open May 13, 20 & 27 this month. A ‘Warrior Boot Camp’ will be held adjacent to the Farmers Market beginning May 6 for every other week.
The Prince George Womans Club will host ‘Community Day’ from 8 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at Scott Park.
The Hometown Heroes 5K Race & Little Hero Feet Meet Fun Run 1-Miler will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at Scott Park.
The Core Committee on Education Facilities will hold a public forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 at Moore Middle School Gymnasium.
The Riverside Regional Jail Authority will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at the Jail’s administrative offices. A Finance Committee meeting will be held at 1:00.
The Prince George High School PTA will host its Annual Car Show at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6 at the Prince George High School parking lot.
The Carson Volunteer Fire Department will host a ‘Community Day’ luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, May 7 at the Carson Volunteer Fire Department.
The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 8 in the Board Room of the Administration Building

The Recreation Advisory Committee will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center on Old Stage Road.
A program on “Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11 at the Prince George Library.
John Tyler Community College will host its Commencement Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the Virginia State University Multipurpose Center.
Fort Lee will host the 7th Annual ‘Run for the Fallen’ at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at Williams Stadium.
Richard Bland College will host its Commencement Ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at Statesman Hall.
The concert series at Appomattox Boat Harbor will continue this month with concerts on May 13 & May 27 beginning at 5 p.m.
Prince George Rotary will hold its annual Scholarship Picnic at 4
p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Scott Park.
Rowanty Spring 2017 Open House will be on May 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 20000 Rowanty Road, Carson.
Richard Bland College will host its 33rd Annual Shrimp Feast at 4 p.m. Wednesday May 17.
The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Education Series will continue 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Sunflower Gardens.
Tri-Cities Law Enforcement Memorial Breakfast will be on Wednesday, May 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Hopewell Moose Lodge, 4701 Western Street, Hopewell.
The Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce will host its 16th Annual President’s Cup Golf Open at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the County Club of Petersburg.
The Appomattox River Water & South Central Wastewater authorities will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the Lake Chesdin offices.
The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the Emergency Operations Center.
The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18 in the Board Room.
The Prince George Alliance for Education Foundation will host a golf tournament at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19 at the Prince George Golf Course.
The Petersburg Area Regional Tourism (PART) will hold its next meeting at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19 at the Crater Planning Commission offices in Petersburg.
The Crater Regional Workforce Investment Board (WIB) will hold its quarterly meeting at 11:30 Friday, May 19 at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.
The Prince George Promise Board of Directors will meet at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19 at the Prince George Library.
The Prince George Police Department will host ‘Tip-A-Cop’ for Special Olympics from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 19 at Nanny’s Restaurant.
Sports Tourism Baseball Tournaments will be held May 20-21 & May 27-28 at various Prince George fields.
Prince George TRIAD will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, May 22 at the Prince George Library.
The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25 in the Board Room.
Fort Lee will host Safety Day at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25 at the Fort Lee Exchange.
Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of May:
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 9 meeting will receive three (3) reports: (1) VDOT; (2) Compensation for members who serve on various appointed boards & commissions; and (3) Fire & EMS staffing at the new Tri-Cities Emergency Department.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 9 meeting will consider granting Staff the authority to advertise a public hearing for a new Jefferson Park voting precinct.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 9 meeting will consider adoption of the FY ’18 Budget.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 9 meeting will discuss recognition extended by the BOS.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 23 meeting will receive a report on the Clean Community Day held April 15.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 23 meeting will consider three (3) public hearings: (1) Sale of lagoon property at River’s Edge; (2) Special exception for Taxidermy shop; and (3) Special Exception for an assembly building on Ruffin Road.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 23 meeting will discuss entering into a contract with a new consultant for a new public radio system.
• The Board of Supervisors at its May 23 meeting will discuss a private-public partnership that will expand broadband services in Prince George County.
• Various Parks & Recreation spring activities are underway and registration is being prepared for various summer/fall programs. Registration can be accepted at www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.
• Big Lots is expected to open its new store on July 27 at the Crossings.
• Construction of improvements at Exit 45 will continue this month.
• The County is currently seeking residents and businesses to participate in the 2017 Citizens Academy. Contact jstoke@princegeorgecountyva.gov to express interest.
