Message from the County Administrator
June 2017


This message is a monthly update in 2017 to better update our citizens and visitors to the website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its only meeting this month at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 in the Board Room of the County Administration Building. A worksession will precede the meeting at 6 p.m. The tentative agenda topics are: (1) Proposed Virginia Health Department Tobacco Policy; (2) 2017 General Assembly Scorecard; and (3) Possible HVAC replacement at the Human Services Building.

Personal property taxes are due Monday, June 5 in the Treasurer’s Office. Penalties will be assessed to those who don’t meet the Midnight deadline.

Primary Election Day will be held Tuesday, June 13 at all voting locations in Prince George County. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Candidates filing for the November 7 General Election must have all documents and signatures submitted or postmarked by Midnight Tuesday, June 13.

Prince George High School will host graduation ceremonies at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the PGHS Football Field.

The Prince George Citizens Academy will have its first meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at the Prince George Library.

The Prince George Farmers Market will continue every Saturday this month at Scott Park from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Scott Park.

A ‘Warrior Boot Camp’ will be held adjacent to the Farmers Market beginning June 3 & 17 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. The Farmers Market will host ‘Prince George Rotary Day’ on June 3.

Sports tourism baseball & softball tournaments will be held June 3, 10 & 24 at Prince George County baseball & softball fields.

Property owners along Exit 45 will gather for a meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6 at the Hampton Inn to discuss establishment of a property owners association.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will be held beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 8 along Courthouse Road.

The Tri-Cities Emergency Center will hold its Grand Opening at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at its location at 1700 Temple Parkway.

Parks & Recreation will host its first Movie Night of the summer at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 9 at Scott Park.

A Rabies Vaccination Clinic will be held from 9 – 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10 at the Animal Services & Adoption Center.

The Harbor Blast Concert Series will continue on June 10 & 24 at the Appomattox Boat Harbor. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The new Tri-Cities Emergency Center will hold an Open House from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10.

The Prince George Social Services Advisory Board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, June 12 in the offices of the Social Services Department.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 12 in the Board Room of the Administration Building.

‘Senior Movie Day’ will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 at Destination Theater.

The Small Business Development Center will host a ‘Building the Foundation for Your New Business’ seminar from 10 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Wednesday, June 14 at the Prince George Library.

The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15 in the Board Room.

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will hold a special meeting at 12:00 Noon Friday, June 16 in the Community Room of the Human Services Building.

The Prince George Public Safety Youth camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. June 19-30 at the Emergency Operations Center.

Riverside Regional Jail will host its 20th Anniversary Celebration from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21.

The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Education Series will continue from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Sunflower Gardens.

The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22 in the Board Room.

The Parks & Recreation Department will host the Dixie League District 3 Softball Tournament June 25-July 1 at Scott Park & Moore Recreation Park.

Prince George TRIAD will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, June 26 at the Prince George Library.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of June:

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will receive the monthly report from VDOT.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider an appropriation of $17,700.28 from Sussex County for Building Official services.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider an amendment to the Service Agreement for the Appomattox Regional Water Authority.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider an appropriation of funds for the FY ’18 Budget.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider a contract for an Employee Benefits Consultant.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider a contract for Delinquent Tax Services.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider awarding a consultant’s contract for Phase II & Phase III for a new radio system.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider awarding a contract for architect and engineering services for the Fire & EMS Burn Building.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider the process for filling the vacancy for the Board of Supervisors in District 1.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider a recommendation for a Special Election to fill a vacancy in a Constitutional Office.

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider four appointments to the Recreation Advisory Commission; an appointment to the District 19 Community Services Board; an appointment to the Regional Library Board; and appointment to the Comprehensive Services Community Policy & Management Team. 

• The Board of Supervisors at its June 13 meeting will consider three (3) public hearings: (1) Change in polling place in Jefferson Park District; (2) Special Exception request for solar energy facility on Rives Road; and (3) Special Exception for an assembly building on Prince George Drive.

• Various Parks & Recreation summer activities are underway and registration is being prepared for various summer/fall programs. Registration can be accepted at http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.

• The search will begin this month to fill three key positions within County Government: Director of Utilities; Director of General Services; and Building Official.

• Construction of improvements at Exit 45 will continue this month.

• Pick up a copy in County Administration of the new Tourism Guide featuring the 100th anniversary of Fort Lee.

• The new Fitness Room is open at the Central Wellness Center from 5-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Additional hours are being considered by Parks & Recreation Staff. Cost of membership is $5 per month or $50 for 12 months.
