Company achieves Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Certification for its wildlife habitat in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — An Alabama-based company has won an environmental award for its wildlife habitat at Prince George County quarry.
Vulcan Materials Company has earned a Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Certification for its wildlife habitat at the Puddledock Sand & Gravel in Prince George.
The Puddledock Plant resides on 850 acres and the site consists of a large quarry that is mined for sand and gravel and a large plant to process construction materials. The site also consists of 350 acres of forested areas, ponds and grasslands that support habitat for a variety of vegetation, avian species and mammals.
Eight members of the Puddledock team oversee habitat enhancement and maintenance for more than 300 acres of the total area while actively managing two projects: Pollinator Gardens and Nest Boxes in order to increase habitat for pollinators as well as provide nesting habitat for the three native species; bluebirds, Canada geese and wood duck.
“The Puddledock Sand & Gravel is one of 177 programs recognized this year as meeting the strict requirements of WHC Conservation Certification,” said Margaret O’Gorman, president of the Wildlife Habitat Council. “Companies achieving WHC Conservation Certification, like Vulcan Materials Company, are environmental leaders, voluntarily managing their lands to support sustainable ecosystems and the communities that surround them.”

Wildlife Habitat Council promotes and certifies habitat conservation and management on corporate lands through partnerships and education. WHC Conservation Certification programs take corporate sustainability goals and objectives and translate them into tangible and measurable on-the-ground actions. WHC-assisted wildlife habitat and conservation education programs are found in 45 states, the District of Columbia and 13 countries.
Vulcan Materials Company, a member of the S&P 500 index, is the nation’s foremost producer of construction aggregates, a major producer of asphalt mix and concrete. Vulcan has 43 WHC-certified wildlife habitats. In 1990, Vulcan’s Sanders Quarry in Virginia was the first industrial site as well as the first quarry in the nation to be certified as a wildlife habitat by WHC.
